KIRKBI family office invests in UK energy storage firm Highview
KIRKBI Climate A/S, the climate investment arm of KIRKBI — the holding company of the Kirk Kristiansen family and controlling shareholder of the LEGO Group — has made a follow-on investment in Highview in 2025, a UK-based developer of long-duration energy storage and grid stability solutions. The investment is part of a GBP 130 million capital raise, bringing total funding secured for Highview’s commercial rollout to over GBP 500 million.
The new capital will fund phase one of Highview’s Hunterston project in Scotland, a so-called “stability island” designed to deliver critical grid stability to the UK electricity grid, with a long-duration energy storage system planned as a second phase. This marks KIRKBI Climate’s second investment in Highview, following a 2024 participation in the Carrington project near Manchester — a 300 MWh liquid air energy storage facility currently under construction. KIRKBI Climate’s overall portfolio currently stands at approximately DKK 10 billion, with ambitions to deploy an additional DKK 10 billion over the next five years across energy transition, circular plastics, and land sustainability.
